When business owners think about their visuals, their minds often jump straight to the logo. But a strong visual identity is more than just a pretty mark on your business card. It’s the whole vibe that tells people what your business is about before they read a single word.
If you’re building (or rebuilding) your branding or visual identity, here are five visual identity must-haves that’ll help you show up consistently, confidently, and professionally across everything from your Instagram to your invoices.
1. A logo, but make it a Family
Let’s start with the obvious one: your logo.
A good logo isn’t just one design. It needs to reflect your brand’s personality, speak to your audience, and be versatile enough to work in tiny or oversized spaces. This is where a logo family comes in. You should have a primary logo, plus simplified versions such as an icon, monogram, wordmarks in different layouts, all in a variety of colour options so you can use your logo where ever you need.
Tip: It’s best practice to have your logo family in multiple file types (PNG, EPS, PDF) so that you can supply the logo to signwriters, embroiders etc.

2. A Cohesive Colour Palette
Colour does a lot of heavy lifting in your branding. It can create mood, build recognition, and signal the type of experience your customers can expect. (Think bold and energetic vs. soft and nurturing.)
Your palette should include:
Primary brand colours (your main ones)
Secondary colours (to add variety)
Neutrals (for balance)
Stick with 3–5 colours max so things don’t get messy.
Below is a colour palette example
3. Consistent Typography
Fonts are one of those things you don’t notice… until they’re wrong.
Your visual identity should include:
A heading font (for big statements)
A body font (for readability)
An optional accent font (for occasional flair. Just don’t go overboard)
Choosing the right combo keeps everything consistent across social posts, flyers, website headings, and even Canva templates.
4. A Set of Brand Elements or Graphics
These are the little touches that make your brand feel complete. These can be icons, patterns, backgrounds, or illustrations. They help tie everything together visually and make your content recognisable even when your logo isn’t front and center.
For example:
- A custom texture or background you use behind text
- Icons that match your style
- A brand pattern for packaging or social posts
They’re subtle, but powerful.
5. A Style Guide
A style guide is your cheat sheet for consistency. It outlines how to use your logo, colours, fonts, and graphics across all your materials. This is a handy way for your (or your team) to make sure your aren’t guessing each time you make something new.
Even a one-pager is better than nothing. It’ll save you time, keep your branding sharp, and stop you from going rogue during a late-night Canva session.
