You’ve got a great service or product. You’re working your butt off. But something’s not clicking… your audience isn’t biting, you’re content looks messy or you’re just not sure where to start. Hate to say it, but your visual branding might be quietly sabotaging your business. Here’s how to spot the red flags and what to do about them.
1. Your Logo Is… Fine? (And That’s the Problem)
If your logo doesn’t spark confidence, it won’t spark interest. DIY, Fiverr or AI logos can be great to get you started (no judgement here), but after a point, they won’t be able to serve your business they way they need to. Has the design been tailored to speak to your audience? Has your business changed as you’ve grown? Have you developed a visual identity to go with your logo, so you know how and why to design things in a particular way?
Fix it: Invest in a visual / branding package with an experienced designer to bring your business to life. Speaking of… check out how I can help here.
2. Your Fonts Are Fighting Each Other
Using Comic Sans for headlines and cursive for body text? Oof. Inconsistent or clashing fonts can make your brand look amateur… even if your services are top notch.
Fix it: Stick to 2–3 fonts max, and make sure they complement each other. Make sure you stay consistent! (Tip: a mini brand style guide can do wonders here.)
3. You’re Using Random Colours
Bright red one week, muted beige the next… Your social feed looks like a mood swing. Without a colour palette, your audience doesn’t know what to expect or how to recognise you at a glance. Remember, you have 1 – 3 seconds to get someone’s attention, and a great way to create a visual attention grabber is with the consistent use of colours.
Fix it: Pick 3–5 brand colours and use them consistently. Bonus points if they evoke the mood you want your business to give off. If you’re not sure if you’re colours are saying the right thing, ask an experienced designer to help. …that’s me 😉
4. Every Platform Looks Different
Your website says one thing, your business card says another, and your social media? That’s a whole different vibe. Inconsistency = confusion. People have very short attention spans, and generally speaking are lazy (I don’t mean this in a bad way), but that means that every second counts when you are trying to make an impression.
Fix it: Align everything. A visual identity kit makes it easier to keep your branding tight across all touchpoints.
5. You’re Attracting the Wrong Kind of Clients
If you keep getting tyre kickers or inquiries for services you don’t even offer anymore, your visuals might be speaking to the wrong crowd. Do you want higher budget clients, but your content looks low end? Do you want a rural client base, but you look too city? You get the idea.. all of this comes into your visual identity and what you are communicating.
Fix it: Reassess who your target audience actually is, then design your visuals to appeal to them, and not to everyone.
