The ongoing debate – should you add prices to your website? The answer unfortunately isn’t as clear as ‘yes’ or ‘no.’
I was recently designing a clients website, and they asked whether or not they should display prices on the website.
This is a great question, and is honestly very dependent on the business. I will list some of the pros and cons of showing prices on your site below.
Showing Prices:
Pros
- Saves times – listing prices will reduce inquiries from bargain shopping that may not want to pay your listed price for your services.
- Reduces unnecessary quoting – if customers already know how much you charge, this can reduce the amount of time you spend quoting jobs; particularly for those that can’t afford your product / service.
- Customers can feel more comfortable with your transparency – this can prompt inquiries sooner from your clients. Showing prices demonstrates a form of honesty.
- Removes ‘Un-affordability Beliefs’ – customers may think your prices are very high if you don’t list them.
- Removes the ‘How much is your Budget’ question – Avoid the awkward conversation, particularly if your prices are above the customers budget.
Cons
- Attracts ‘price shopping’ clients that don’t necessarily see the value in your work.
- May deter the ability to convey your value – You may be able to better demonstrate the full value of your product / service through a conversation or in depth email.
- Competitors may undercut you – listing prices may mean that your competitors can price themselves lower than you. You can look at focusing on your point of difference, which can convince people to buy from you instead of your competitors.
- Can lower customer rapport – customers may shy away or not inquire based on your prices, which removes the opportunity to build a relationship with potential clients.
You can see there are a both pros and cons to listing prices.
Overall, by showing prices you can remove the likelihood of attracting tyre kickers and save yourself some time.
However, sometimes you may have a complex product, or hold values differently in your business that make listing prices difficult.
Ultimately it is up to you, the business owner or marketing manager to decide whether or not it’s suitable to list prices on your website.
If you’re still unsure, the best thing you can do is to test it! Place your prices up for a period of time and monitor your traffic and inquiries. Then remove them and do the same.
